Allée de Tourny
Tourny takes the reins
Bordeaux first began to change under Intendant Claude Boucher, who was already planning to create a route linking the Chàpeau Rouge and St Germain gates (the latter having since been replaced by the Place Tourny). But as from 1744, it was Intendant Tourny who lined up the old, twisting Route du Médoc with the Rue Fondaudège. He decided to plant it with elms and limes and have it go right down to the river. The opening of the promenade was celebrated by the whole town, with free wine and dancing in the brightly lit Allées.
