Varying Heights
On one side, buildings of varying heights. On the other, Les Quinconces seem to offer a more utilitarian, pragmatic and altogether more down-to-earth perspective. It has to be said, that the remit changed somewhat between the original plan and the compromises made by the town council. The architect originally insisted that all the houses should be in line and reach a maximum height no higher than the attics. They needed to be able to shoot at the townsfolk from the Château Trompette, if there was a riot! So did the danger of riots recede? Or was the property market...
