Jean Jacques Bel

Tourny insisted on opening Rue Jean Jacques Bel, so as to create a direct route from his Allées to the Chapelle des Jacobins. It took two years of wrangling between him and the Academy for him to achieve his end, as the new street cut right through both garden and building.

Jean-Jacques Bel (1693-1738), like Montesqieu, was educated by the Oratorians at their college in Juilly, before becoming advisor to the Bordeaux parliament.
